Total Identification describes a society in which the actions of every citizen are constantly monitored and identified. This can be done through visual tracking, informants and electronic exchanges. Prompted by increased threat of terrorist strikes, many societies in 2009 are already some way towards achieving this frightening reality; the UK is the most watched society in the world, and every person makes over 300 appearance on CCTV (close-circuit television) each day. As well as this there are: credit and debit cards, driver plate recognition cameras, patient records and doubtless also satellite tracking and phone tapping. Many of the technologies and ideas that would make total identification possible have not yet been developed or deployed, but one thing is clear: growing concerns over safety are slowly but surely eroding civil liberties.
